A sense of infinite possibility hung over the Valhalla Golf Club Sunday afternoon as the final groups in the PGA Championship teed off. Around noon, 45 minutes of biblical rain halted play for nearly two hours, so one bit of suspense turned out to be whether the players would be able to finish before dark, or with more rain in the forecast, the end of the tournament would be pushed to Monday.

This bit of suspense wasn't resolved until the final putt dropped, at 8:43 p.m., with darkness all but shrouding Louisville and bolts of lightning flashing in the distance. But nothing could contain the incandescent brilliance of the champion, Rory McIlroy.

The victory was his third in a row and his second consecutive major, after winning the British Open last month. McIlroy joins Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players since 1934 to win four majors by the age of 25.

"I didn't think in my wildest dreams I'd have a summer like this," McIlroy said in accepting the Wanamaker Trophy.
